The fight card for UFC 111 was finalized today as it was officially announced that Thiago ‘Pitbull’ Alves (22-5-0) will rematch Jon Fitch (24-3-0) at the March 27th event in Newark, NJ. This welterweight match-up was originally scheduled for UFC 107 back in December but Alves was forced to withdraw due to a nagging injury.
Fitch and Alves first squared off at a 2006 UFC Fight Night event where Fitch became one of the few fighters to walk away from an encounter with Alves victorious. Throughout the bout Fitch was able to control Alves with superior grappling, but a vicious up-kick late in the second round dropped ‘Pitbull’ for the last time of the night.
Comparing the two fighters its amazing how similar a path their careers have taken – both fell victim to welterweight champion Georges ‘Rush’ St. Pierre, both have exactly 27 bouts under their belt, and both train at the two premiere training camps in the country. Fitch has been spending his time out in San Jose, CA working at American Kickboxing Academy alongside the likes of Cain Velasquez, Josh Koscheck, and Mike Swick. Alves represents American Top Team of Coconut Creek, FL where he trains under Master Ricardo Liborio rolling and sparring with such fighters as Thiago Silva, Mike Brown, and the infamous Kimbo Slice.
With the addition of Alves vs. Fitch, the UFC 111 card looks to be one of the best in recent years as the entire lineup is absolutely loaded with talent across all divisions. Check out the full roster below and be sure to mark your calendars for this can’t miss event:
