Pro wrestling pioneer Paul Heyman talks about Brock Lesnar's brush with death, his new diet and his July 3rd fight with Shane Carwin

Paul Heyman, who has been close friends with Brock Lesnar since Lesnar’s time in World Wrestling Entertainment years ago, has updated his HeymanHustle.com blog with a look at Lesnar’s road to recovery and his upcoming fight with Shane Carwin on July 3rd. Heyman puts over Lesnar strong as one of the elite athletes in sports history and says Lesnar is in the prime of his career and ready to keep making history.

Here are some highlights of what Heyman said about:

Brock Lesnar’s life threatening battle with Diverticulosis:

“Just six months ago, Brock Lesnar’s career was for all intents and purposes, one for the history books. An intense battle with Diverticulosis sidelined the baddest man on the planet, and almost killed him … Brock Lesnar went through a humbling experience with his illness. It made him realize he’s human. He can feel physical pain. He’s not invincible nor even invulnerable. He’s the very best at what he does, but like all “Best Ever” Athletes, the clock ticks away, and the human frailties rear their ugly heads.”

Lesnar is In the Prime of His Career:

“Brock Lesnar is 32 years old. He will turn 33 a little more than a week after his July 3rd return to the cage against UFC Interim Champion Shane Carwin. Think about it. 32 years old … in the best shape of his life … with a changed diet that has only made him healthier.Brock has a better understanding of his own body now than he did six months ago. He is unquestionably in the peak prime of his athletic career.”

Lesnar’s UFC Return On July 3rd Against Shane Carwin:

“On July 3rd, Brock Lesnar returns to the Octagon. His opponent is a 12-0 Knockout King who is quickly becoming the Mike Tyson of the Ultimate Fighting Championships. No man has survived the 1st round with Shane Carwin. No man has withstood Carwin’s violent assault. No man has fought Shane Carwin in this sport without leaving the cage a victim of a first round knockout … Shane Carwin hits hard. Scary hard. Inhumanly hard. Hard, fast, and violently. This guy is no F’N joke.”

UFC Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar spoke to ESPN this week and had some interesting things to say about his brush with death earlier this year, how UFC President Dana White compares to WWE boss Vince McMahon and whether he’d ever return to the wrestling promotion that put his name on the map.

His Medical Illness: “I’ve put myself in this category as this confrontational person who creates controversy, but for people to grasp what was happening and to be like, “Holy s—, I might never be able to see this guy fight again!” That saddened them more than anything probably. I’m sure some of them said, ‘I hope that son of a b—- dies.’ I don’t know. I’m sure there are people out there like that, but that’s just the way it is… My hands [are my biggest weakness right now]. I’m constantly working on my hands, I’m constantly working on my ground game, and constantly trying not to get satisfied with where I’m at with my career and where I’m at as an athlete. I’m somewhat happy, but never satisfied…

Dana White vs. Vince McMahon: “If I had to say one thing about Vince [McMahon] it would be ruthless. If I had to say something about Dana [White] it would be diligent and somewhat brilliant. Two different approaches to business.”

Guest Hosting WWE RAW:“I had a great run with WWE. WWE gave me great visibility, I met my wife there, and I got paid a lot of money, it was just my time to go. I sensed it. I was smart enough to leave. That’s the bottom line… I wouldn’t be opposed to [a one night only return to the WWE]. I’m still focused on my fighting right now, but if the opportunity arose some day, I’d never say never.”

David Bollea won his second MMA fight (he’s now 2-0) while Colton tombs lost his MMA debut by decision.

- UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar will likely return to action for a title defense in July, according to comments from UFC President Dana White at Thursday’s UFC 109 press conference:

“He could fight probably in July, end of June or July. We gotta find out what’s gonna happen with the next two fights, the heavyweight fights, and then we’ll figure out what we’re gonna do. This fight (Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Cain Velasquez) will happen in Australia first, then we’ll do the Newark fight (Frank Mir vs. Shane Carwin), and if those guys come out of that fight healthy, we’ll do that fight.”

Lesnar tells ESPN that he will return to the UFC this summer in a unification title fight after a severe intestinal disorder healed itself without surgery, which he called a "miracle"

UFC Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar

UFC Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar will return to the UFC this summer in a unification title fight after a severe intestinal disorder healed itself without surgery, which he and Dana White described as an outright “miracle.”

Lesnar, who has been out of the public eye since pulling out of his fight with Shane Carwin back in November, spoke live on ESPN’s SportsCenter show on Wednesday morning and described the entire ordeal for the first time. Lesnar was diagnosed with having a hole in his stomach and was going to need surgery that would remove part of his colon and effectively end his MMA career. He lost 40 pounds in the hospital and at one point went 11 days without food or water and was fed intravenously. Doctors were “dumbfounded” when the situation healed itself – which he called a “miracle.”

Here’s the ESPN video of the interview along with our detailed recap.

Brock Lesnar told ESPN that during his training for a title defense against Shane Carwin scheduled for last November, he started feeling sick during training. After missing 3 weeks of his training camp, he visited multiple doctors, who couldn’t diagnose what his problem was. Lesnar told his trainer, “Icant do this fight” and he was diagnosed with mononucleosis. He was devastated having to back out of a fight. He decided to make the most of it and travel to Canada for a hunting trip. While there, he experienced severe stomach pain like he’s never felt in his life. He woke up one night with a 104 degree temperature and going into shock. He was hospitalized and diagnosed with a severe case of diverticulitis. He literally had a hole in his stomach.

Lesnar traveled to to the Med Center 1 medical facility in Bismark, South Dakota. Lesnar credited the doctors there for saving his life and career. While there, he lost 40 pounds in 30 days. At one point he went 11 days without food or water and was fed intravenously.

He traveled to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester to get a second opinion and both facilities recommended he undergo a major surgery that would remove part of his colon, end his figthing career and severely alter his quality of life. Doctors told him they couldn’t perform the surgery until the swelling in his stomach went down and was told to return on January 5th for an update. At this point, he was expecting to undergo the surgery and he knew his fighting career was probably over.

When he re returned to doctors on January 5th, they were dumbfounded to find that Lesnar’s body had healed himself. Doctors told him the medical mystery was like having a winning lottery ticket and called the healing a “miracle.”

Dana White chimed in and said surgery would have changed Lesnar’s life. He held off on surgery and he healed himself. During his town time, Lesnar got into “holistic stuff” and changed his diet, which had a positive effect on his recovery. White too called it a miracle.

When asked if there was any health risks of him returning to mixed martial arts fighting, Lesnar said 3 or 4 specialist told him he has nothing to worry about and can resume a normal career. Lesnar said he’s had colonoscopies, CT scans and there are no signs of anything wrong with him. He said that time in the hospital was especially hard for him because he felt helpless and like he had no control over the situation. He thanked his wife, Rena “Sable” Mero, his family, Dana White, the UFC and his sponsors for their constant support.
dana, sponsors

When asked when he’ll fight again, Dana White said “this summer.” During Lesnar’s downtime, UFC booked an interim title fight between undefeated heavyweight Shane Carwin and former champion Frank Mir for UFC’s March pay-per-view. The winner of that fight will face Lesnar in a title vs. title unification fight this summer in what is sure to be a blockbuster event.

Overall it was a great segment. They showed clips throughout the interview of Lesnar dismantling Randy Couture and Frank Mir in his two most recent fights. Lesnar was well spoken and the ESPN interviewer commented that his demeanor was very serious. Lesnar is a very lucky man and the UFC’s top box office attraction will hopefully be fighting for many years to come.

Rumors are spreading that Lesnar has begun training again and he is scheduled to appear on Sportscenter tomorrow morning to discuss his health status...

Reports are circulating that Brock Lesnar is scheduled to make an appearance on tomorrow’s edition of ESPN Sportscenter at 11:00AM to discuss his health issues and future as a mixed martial artist. However, ESPN has yet to respond to our inquiry into whether or not the segment will air, as neither UFC nor ESPN appear to be advertising the appearance via their websites.

At this time we deem this to be an unconfirmed rumor at best seeing as typically a press conference is held to address these matters with the press. Fortunately if you have cable tevelsion it doesn’t cost you anything to tune into ESPN tomorrow at 11:00AM, but we will update this post with a definitive answer as soon as we have one.

After fears that Brock Lesnar’s health was so bad that he’d never fight again, the UFC Heavyweight champ’s trainer Greg Nelson says that Brock is “definitely come back to fight” again for UFC.

Nelson told ESPN that Lesnar is “slowly getting his body ready and being smart with his recovery” after suffering an intestines infection that UFC president Dana White originally feared could end Lesnar’s fight career.

Nelson added that he believes Lesnar will be “back faster than people expect.”

An interim heavyweight title fight is scheduled for March between Frank Mir and Shane Carwin.

UFC is said to be planning on having Frank Mir (13-4) face off against Shane Carwin (11-0) at UFC 111 on March 27 for a UFC interim heavyweight title

UFC Heavyweight Shane Carwin

It looks like the UFC may have found a temporary fix for the current state of the company’s heavyweight title which is currently in limbo due to the poor health of Brock Lesnar. Reports are surfacing that the UFC is planning on having Frank Mir (13-4) face off against Shane Carwin (11-0) at UFC 111 on March 27 for the UFC interim heavyweight title.

Carwin was originally named the #1 contender to Lesnar’s heavyweight title and the two were set to face off at UFC 108, however Lesnar’s health problems have stalled any plans involving the company’s heavyweight title. If it is revealed that Lesnar won’t be returning anytime soon, then the UFC will most likely vacate his title and put it up for grabs in the Mir/Carwin fight with the winner of that fight expected to face the winner of the UFC 110 fight between Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Cain Velasquez sometime in the summer.

As everyone knows by now, Lesnar is suffering from some terrible intestinal problems and the UFC is still unsure if he will ever fight again. They are currently waiting for Lesnar’s test results to come back to see how he is healing, however he has still yet to take those tests.

Former UFC Heavyweight champion Frank Mir is calling for Brock Lesnar’s title to be vacated and questions whether Lesnar will be able to compete at the same level after missing so much time due to illness. Mir told Cagewriter:

“If (Brock Lesnar) is going to be out for that long, should he even hold on to the belt at all? The interim title works if a champion is not able to defend his belt within a year-long period, you know he’s going to be out eight, nine months, you make the interim belt than he comes back after a year but as of now his last fight was in July. If he’s out a year from today’s date that’s a year and a half and at that point, I don’t think you can hold the belt ransom. They gave me about a year when I had my injury so I’ve been on that side of the coin and I was more than happy to relinquish the belt because I felt kind of selfish that I really couldn’t do anything with it. I don’t how successful he’s going to be coming back. That’s going to be a question over his head for a while. It wasn’t like he was a slick, technical fighter to begin with. A lot of his style went upon his brute power and strength. If Brock Lesnar is unable to put on the same kind of size as he had before … I don’t think he’s going to be very successful as a fighter at 245.”

Mir (13-4) is expected to fight undefeated heavyweight contender Shane Carwin (11-0) at UFC 111 on March 27 for the UFC interim heavyweight title. Carwin was originally scheduled to fight Brock Lesnar in November at UFC 108, however Lesnar’s health problems put that on the shelf.

UFC President Dana White comments on Brock Lesnar's health - when Brock will know if he needs surgery - and whether UFC will once again have to create an interim HW title

UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lensar

To update the health condition of UFC Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar, Dana White said over the weekend that we’ll find out in approximately a month whether UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar will need the major surgery to repair the ravages of the intestinal disease diverticulitis.

Related: Diverticulitis Explained (Mayo Clinic)

White claimed that if Lesnar does indeed need that operation that an interim UFC Heavyweight title would be created and given to someone while Lesnar continues to recover.

In the past, when interim champions are crowned, the linear champion returns and unifies the title with the interim champion in his first fight back.

As of now no fight is rumored for the interim title, if it were needed to be created, but Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Cain Velasquez on February 21st would be a good possibility.

To recap, Lesnar’s trainer Greg Nelson told MMAWeekly.com last week, “… he’s walking around and moving around. He’s not ready to jump into that cage, that’s for sure at this point…. I’m not 100 percent sure right now [when he'll start training again]. We’re not really pushing it right now. We’re just letting things take their course so he can be 100-percent healthy when he starts to train. He’ll probably start lifting weights to get his strength built up and do the exercise bike when he starts to get going, and shadowbox when he gets to feel better. But right now, he’s just taking the time to properly heal.”

Shane Carwin puts Brock Lesnar over and more.

Shane Carwin was recently interviewed by bleacherreport.com, here are the highlights:

On Defending Brock Lesnar: I certainly think Brock gives the fans plenty to pick at when he is healthy and able to defend himself. Here is a guy who not only is so sick he can’t fight, but he may never fight again. He has spent a lot of his life being a professional athlete, and then all of a sudden he is at risk of losing his ability to compete. I felt compelled to make sure that people knew I didn’t feel that Brock was “ducking me” or any of the other crazy things that were being said. Brock is a warrior, and I do not see him ducking anyone.

On Fighting For An Interim Title: Titles are not important to me. The interim title is second place with a medal. I am already in that spot (the No. 1 contender spot), and I do not mind fighting to protect that spot, but I do not need a glorified trophy to do it. The champion is Brock, and he has the only belt that should matter to any fighter in the heavyweight division. I do not want to be the glorified contender, I want to be the guy that went in and fought the best guy in our division for the most prestigious prize in our sport. Until then, I am just another UFC heavyweight at the top of the division waiting for a fight.

On Being Disappointed In Fedor Signing With Strikeforce: Only because I would like to fight the guy. He is one of the best P4P in the world and as a heavyweight, he is the standard. If you are a true competitor you would want to face Fedor and test yourself against one of the greatest fighters of all time. Fedor could technically be considered undefeated: He has 30 fights and will go down as one of the legends of our sport. Strikeforce has a huge viewing audience, and they are willing to co-promote with M1. I suspect CBS will realize what they have in Fedor and will increase their marketing of him and Strikeforce.

On Not Fighting in Nine Months: Not really; we train hard at Grudge Training Center, and it’s not like I am taking time off. The other way to see it is I have had to get ready for two different fighters over three training camps and how much that has improved my game?

On The Heavyweights From This year’s Ultimate Fighter: They need to get that cardio up for sure. Guys like Cain Velasquez have unlimited gas tanks, and you do not want to gas against the UFC’s elite heavyweights. I think some of those guys are going to be a force in the division, and I look forward to seeing them rise to the top.
