Randy Chase, a marketing executive for EA Sports, appeared on MMAJunkie.com radio last night to discuss the upcoming EA ‘MMA’ video game which Chase said is set to release late summer 2010 as opposed to November 2010 which had been reported previously.
In addition to a revised release date, Chase also confirmed that Frank ‘Twinkle Toes’ Trigg (19-7-0) will also be digitized into a playable character, marking yet another UFC fighter who has decided to to appear in the game which mostly features top Strikeforce talent. This is a timely announcement with Trigg set to face Matt ‘The Terror’ Serra (9-6-1) this weekend at UFC 109, and it seems clear that EA is attempting to stir the pot in the promotional war between UFC and Strikeforce.
Last summer UFC President Dana White threatened to ban any fighter from competing inside the octagon should they decide to appear in the EA game, and White also had some harsh words for the game maker saying:
‘We put our asses on the line, THQ and the UFC, to make a video-game deal in the worst economy in the world,’ White said. ‘We go out there and do this thing, and it’s successful, and now [expletive] EA Sports wants to do a video game. Really? That’s not what you told us a year-and-a-half ago.’
Following these remarks, Randy ‘The Natural’ Couture (17-10-0) then signed on to appear in ‘EA MMA’, and was subsequently offered a six-fight UFC contract by White, proving once again that the president’s bark is much worse than his bite. It will be interesting to see what, if any, consequences there are for Trigg joining the EA MMA roster as he does not carry the nearly same clout as Couture who is a two-time champion that can still deliver big PPV numbers.
